Art: Négative-Space Painting

To learn and appreciate the concept of negative-space in art, Mme Alex set us a model of a raven, paint/milk bucket, a Styrofoam head, and  scissors. We had to draw the outline of these objects, no inside details, just the outline. Then paint certain parts of the negative-space, which would be everything that is not inside or part of the outline. My first attempt did not result nicely thus for the art exhibition, following the chosen them of Death, I decided to try once again. Below is the result. 

Art: One-Line Self Portrait

This week, the focus or main concept in art class was "one-line". Below is my second self-portrait of the year where I had to sit in front of a mirror and draw myself in one line. I could not remove the pencil from page, nor erase past lines; everything needed to be drawn in one-line. This proved to be difficult as well as a project in need of repetition to practice. Even so, I prefer the resulting portrait from my first attempt.

Steps:
a) choose a painting
b) print out a sizeable copy to trace off of
c) transfer the drawing onto the lino piece
d) carve the painting
e) experiment with different colours to print with

Comments:
Myself: I am regretful that I could not find the lino carving which I had done, for I spent many classes gently carving every detail I could accomplish.

Art: My first painting draft for Time Painting

Today is my first day back to school since coming home last Saturday, from Europe. Hence I am behind in some work. Therefore, as my friends are finishing their first or even second painted drafts, I have just begun. I have so far completed the first image square and it is of the saying, Time Flies. The photo of it is below.

The photo below shows my second completed image square of my first painted draft. This image square is of the saying Can't Fight Time.

Art: Gesso for Time Painting

My art teacher is sick today, but she left us our itinerary. The first thing on the list is to complete our three sketch drafts. The second activity is to gesso three white sheets. With my three sketch drafts somewhat complete, I was able to gesso. I was instructed to tape down three, stretched-flat, white sheets; and gesso them. These three gessoed sheets will be used for our studies. By studies, I mean three new drafts; three new painted drafts. Which leads to the third instruction of beginning to sketch out and paint our three new drafts on the dried gessoed sheets. The photo is of my drying gessoed sheets. I had taped them stretched-out so when gessoed they would not wrinkle, but I guess I didn't do a good enough job for the middle one is quite wrinkled. I guess I'll have to see if, when dry, they won't be as wrinkled since the gesso will have settled-in.

Art: Completing the first 3 sketch drafts for Time Painting

My art teacher is home sick today and left us instructions for the day. The first instruction is to complete our first three sketch drafts. In step 4 you would have seen my first sketch draft. The photo in this post is my second sketch draft with each of the frames' colour pallet.

The first set assignment was a self portrait. There were no specific rules or regulations, just that we needed to be able to explain the piece orally and through our first artist statement. Most of my colleagues decided to draw, but I felt as if I could express myself better through words, photos, citations, names, etc...

Art: Brainstorm continuation - Rough sketching & colourpallet for Time Painting

With ideas in mind and examples to refer to, I now needed to draw a draft/outline of the six concepts I am using to represent Time. Thus the empty boxes on my brainstorming sheet are now filled with my rough sketches of how each saying will be represented. I also had the time to establish a basic colour pallet for each saying. The following picture is of the updated version of my brainstorm for my Time painting.

Art: Searching for inspiration for Time Painting

With the theme and chosen sayings, I proceeded to look for inspiration. I went online, on google images, and used my chosen sayings and the word Time as the key words/phrases for my research. The following images are ones which I would like to base my painting off of. Each or two images represent one of the chosen sayings. The sayings are indicated alongside the corresponding image(s). All images belong to the artist who created the piece, but it will not be always indicated because I might not know the artist and/or the exhibition it belongs to.

Art: Brainstorming for Time Painting

For art, my classmates and I were assigned to do a painting. Although we were to not simply paint an object such as a bowl of fruits, but paint a theme. After thinking and throwing ideas around with a friend, I finished with three possible concepts; time, corruption and the natural illusion/phenomenon of rainbows. With those three ideas I wrote and drew up my first brainstorm of my painting (refer to the 1rst photo). This basic brainstorm allowed me to eliminate my subjects from three to one; time. With Time as my theme, I then proceeded to make a second mind-map/brainstorm (refer to 2nd and 3rd photo), which is not complete. This brainstorm has allowed me to decide that I will be painting six smaller perspectives of time, based on common sayings such as Time Flies. The mind-map is not complete for I am in the process of searching for references/examples (paintings, images, and artists) to visually base my painting off of.

My art teacher has instructed my peers and I to draw and paint numerous drafts of our painting in hope to help us decide the colour pallet, method and techniques we will be using to paint, and the look/style which we want to achieve with our paintings. Today I had the chance to begin and almost complete my first sketch draft of my Time themed painting. The photo is of the start of my first draft, of the many to come.

With the help of many video tutorials of How To Draw...., I was able to complete, I think, my first black and white, rough sketch draft of my painting. The photos are of the frames of the updated first sketch draft of my Time themed painting.
